Deciduous, spreading tree to 10m tall, occasionally multi-stemmed, with pale brown flaking bark and rich green, 5-lobed leaves on long red petioles, the leaves turning orange and red in autumn. Conspicuous upright candle-like greenish-yellow flower spikes in late spring are followed by brownish-red winged fruits
