'Phoenix' is a medium upright tree or large branching shrub, to 6m tall and wide, characterised by its coloured bark and shoots. Winter shoots are bright red, striped silvery-white and the bark is striped with orange-pink and silvery-white. Large green leaves turn a golden-yellow in autumn and small yellow-green flowers, borne in spring, are followed by winged fruit
