A large, upright tree with broadly-oval, glossy leaves, up to 20cm long, on long, reddish stalks. In mid-summer it produces small clusters of greenish-white flowers, followed by conspicuous, claw-shaped, greyish-brown seed capsules (on female or bisexual trees)
