A small, deciduous tree to about 2m, which is grafted onto a straight trunk which allows the branches to hang in a weeping style forming the Umbrella of its name. The leaves open in spring as a very dark purple, which fades to red-purple and then green-red for the rest of the summer. In autumn they turn dark yellow before falling
