About this plant

A deciduous shrub to 1.2m high, with ovate, serrated green leaves that are flushed with red when young, and turn dark red before they fall in autumn. In summer, large, flattened, lace-cap flower heads are produced, with clusters of tiny deep pink or purple fertile flowers surrounded by large white florets, that develop to a matching colour as the season progresses

Cultivation

Grow in moist but well-drained, humus rich soil, in a lightly shaded spot with shelter from cold, drying winds. Mulch annually in spring. Pink flower colours are best maintained by growing in slightly alkaline soil, though plants may become chlorotic in strongly alkaline soils. See hydrangea cultivation for more detailed advice
