Grow in moist but well-drained, humus rich soil in part shade, will tolerate full sun if soil remains moist. Requires acid soil to produce blue colouring, in alkaline soils the flowers will become pink. Provide shelter from cold, drying winds. See hydrangea cultivation

Propagate by softwood cuttings in early summer, or hardwood cuttings in winter

May be susceptible to aphids, scale insects, vine weevils and capsid bug

May be susceptible to grey moulds, powdery mildews, leaf spot, honey fungus and virus diseases
