In summer, flat lace-cap type flower heads bear clusters of tiny fertile flowers, with a few larger florets held on short, delicate stems around the edges. Flower colour varies depending on the pH of the soil, and deepens as the season progresses, from near white when the flowers open to rich pink, lilac or blue in late summer
