R. aesculifolia var. henrici is a herbaceous perennial up to 1.5m high with red stems, large palmate leaves, up to 75cm across, of paddle-shaped leaflets with long tapering tips, opening deep bronze in spring then turning green by summer, and panicles of pink-red flowers in summer
