A giant, annual grass with a stout, hollow stem to 2m, and arching, glossy, sword-shaped, mid-green leaves. Spikes of pale green, male flowers appear at the top of the stem, with female flowers, which go on to produce the edible cobs, appearing lower down, encased in a green husk, with the styles emerging as a silky, pale green tassel.
